It is with great sadness that we have to inform you that Tom Kilby, Honorary Vice President of the Essex League, passed away on Monday.
Tom might have more recently been known as an umpire but he was also an excellent cricketer, at one time captaining Ilford 1st XI between 1976 and 1979, later on repeating the role in their 2nd XI between 1990 and 1993. When the time came to hang up his spikes he chose to continue serving the game as a first-rate umpire and also volunteering countless hours in helping to organise umpires recruitment, training and organisation as well as serving for 16 years (2004-2020) on the Essex League executive committee.
In the words of just one of the many tributes made online following the news this week: "Tom was an excellent cricketer, a top umpire and a gentleman of the highest order. He loved cricket... we will all miss him.""
Tom is pictured (second from the left holding the umbrella) in "action" at during a rain delay at Gidea Park & Romford in this article's feature image.
His friends, family and colleagues are all in the thoughts and prayers of everyone involved The Hamro Foundation Essex League.
Tom's funeral will be held on Monday 18th December at 11:30 am:
South Essex Crematorium,
And afterwards at:
Hutton Cricket Club
