New Season Update - Please Read

04 May 2023

Lengthy update ahead of the new season starting tomorrow.

Coronation Cup and Celebrations

We hope that anyone celebrating the Coronation has a fantastic day. In particular we hope the first Coronation Cup match between Wanstead and Snaresbrook v Chingford is a celebration of cricket.

Find the League Rules For Your Division

All rules and regulations for your division can be found at this link https://www.essexcricket.com/pages/page_34628/Rules-and-Regulations.aspx

 - we suggest clubs and captains bookmark the links for their XI’s rules.

Format

All clubs will follow the same format timings this year:

First 5 league matches will be overs games,

Then the middle 9 will be time games, and

Then final 4 will be overs again.

Balls

For each match in the league clubs need to provide one ball each for the matches.

New Laws

As explained at the pre-season meeting there are new laws in place. In particular:

No saliva on ball (this was a league rule in 2022 season)

Batters can no longer cross during a catch being taken

All new laws can be viewed here https://www.lords.org/lords/news-stories/mcc-announces-new-code-of-laws-from-1-october-2022

DLS/Rain

The forecast is a little iffy on Saturday - clubs should be aware of the rain rules for their division and level. In particular, there is no need for clubs to provide printers for 1st XI.

For 1st and 2nd XI matches rain impacted matches will use the DLS calculator found on the Play Cricket Scorer app

Android Download

Apple Download

It is the responsibility of both clubs to ensure that someone is present from each club at each match (This can be a player, official or non-playing person) who has access to the ECB Play Cricket Scorer App. This App is available on iOS or Android, it is free, it does not require a log-in nor a network to be fully functional. This App contains a Duckworth-Lewis-Stern calculator which should be used to calculate revised par scores or to determine the result in the case of abandonment. The captains, umpires (if present) and scorers (if present) will be responsible for recalculating the overs and giving these details to the person who will operate the application. If either club does not provide the above App in a rain-interrupted game then they will be deemed to have forfeited the match. The non-offending club will be declared the winners and the offending club will take no points from the match.

To find the calculator, open the app, click on tools (at the bottom), and select Duckworth-Lewis Stern.

It is well worth having a play around with this before a match.

Umpire Contact

If umpires need to be contacted due to wet weather or any other match issue please contact them directly - their details can be found at this link https://www.essexcricket.com/pages/page_35032/Umpires-Information.aspx

Club Contact

All club contacts can be found at this link https://www.essexcricket.com/pages/page_36799/club-contacts.aspx

Please continue to talk to your opposition and to discuss any issues.

Teas

Arrangements are the same as last season, 1st and 2nd XI matches will have teas provided for players and officials by the home side.

All other XIs will provide their own teas, unless agreed between clubs beforehand.

Live Streaming

As mentioned at the pre-season meeting any clubs who wish to live stream matches must follow the ECB Live Streaming Guidance https://resources.ecb.co.uk/ecb/document/2022/02/14/8f153276-1990-418c-ac19-360b382915e0/ECB-Live-Streaming-Guidance-September-2021-.pdf as well as making sure that permission has been received from all players and officials.

Discipline

There have been tweaks to the discipline process and committee:

Tony Sanderson remains as Disciplinary Secretary and should be who is communicated to with any issues

Martin Pluck is now the Discipline Adjudicator

Ayaz Karim is the Disciplinary Hearing Chair - if a hearing is ever required

If any of this panel above’s clubs are involved in a disciplinary matter, Tom Clarke as League Chairman will slot into their place.

The league follows the General Conduct Regulations - which can be viewed here https://images.secure-club.com/clubs/4852/docs/Rules%20and%20Regulations/2023/ECB-Regulations/16-15-GCR%20vF%20(including%20appendices%20and%20links).pdf

All players, captains and league club officials should make sure to have made themselves familiar with the GCR.

1st XI Captain Reports

All 1st XI Captains must submit a report to the league by 5pm on the Monday following the match.

This form is found here https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScQWPOdyZgRiFBPE2yiY0swyeft7rpFe166fumZJI_NEZwKHQ/viewform - and also under the forms tab on the website.

All other captains and players can submit an exception report to highlight positives and negatives which can again be found under the forms tab on the website - but this is not mandatory.

Registering Players

All players must be registered on Play Cricket by the season and match deadlines. The league committee receives a huge amount of nominations at this time of year, so please get the nominations in as quickly as possible.

Please don’t chase up nominations, unless very close to deadlines.

All registration details and clarifications are found within the laws - there are deadlines for new 1st XI and overseas players. Please again make sure to have read the rules.

Penalty Points

The committee do not enjoy having to hand out penalty points, but we will if deadlines are missed… the most common are

No scorer (1st XI Prem Div, Div 1, Div 2, Div 3)

Result not inputted by the deadline

Incomplete scorecards by the deadline

Not confirming the result (clicking the cross to turn it into a tick)

No 1st XI captain report received

Please make sure all captains know of the regular issues and try to stop any point penalties from occurring.

Thanks for taking the time to read this update, and for your continued work around getting matches played.

The committee and I hope that everyone at your clubs has a fantastic season.

Any questions or clarifications please let me know.

Regards

Thomas Clarke
