Congratulations to Doug Shrewing on winning the 2020 Andrew Jenner Award. Doug's citation is reproduced below:
Doug is now in his 80s and still playing when he can. Doug has been with Hornchurch cricket for many years, probably the longest serving and probably oldest active player. Along with playing, majority of people are not aware of what Doug contributes towards Hornchurch Cricket Club.
Doug was the fixture secretary and has been for many years, doing a sterling job I may add. Doug is also in charge of the bar, attends the cash and carry to purchase whatever is needed, restocks the bar and keeps it functioning. Doug will work the bar not only on the weekend, but any time there is a function and does this without question. Doug attends any meeting that is required to represent Hornchurch Cricket Club and I am sure many other clubs are aware of Doug.
When there is a friendly fixture, Doug would be the last person there with the opposition either at home or away fixtures. Doug was the person in charge of official Hornchurch Kit for many years and would always carry around kit for people to purchase.
During my time as a colt, Doug would be ‘ferrying’ the young ones to and from games and still does so to this day.
Doug will always volunteer to umpire Youth matches at home or away. I must say he is opposition friendly!!
Doug is the Hornchurch ‘stat’ man. If there is a stat about Hornchurch, then Doug would know this due to archiving all results, stats and fixtures in his home.
I am sure there are many people like Doug out there at other cricket clubs, but there is only one Doug Shewring.
Without Doug, I am sure that Hornchurch would be struggling to exist and to run as smooth as it does now.
