With England entering the field of play today and the optimism that provides to us all that Cricket is getting closer to returning, I felt It was a good opportunity for me to write to thank you for the patience, efforts, adaptability and community spirit you have all shown through this Summer. It has been motivational and heart-warming to hear of all the efforts that so many of you have made including virtual coaching sessions and charity nights, Alternative Teas and a large number of other community lead initiatives. These all clearly demonstrate the power that Cricket has to connect with its community.
You may be interested to know that as a County we have had just under £1.7m go back to clubs through grants and loans. Within this figure over £50k has been raised by clubs themselves, with around £20k being donated to local charities, another huge achievement by you all.
I think we all share the frustration around some of the processes and lack of clarity as to where Cricket sits in the easing of the lock down and you can rest assured that we at Essex Cricket are doing everything in our power to try to accelerate the process. Once again, I thank you for the efforts and flexibility you have shown to reopen your clubs following the ECB guidelines.
With the pressure seeming to mount on the Government to reactivate recreational sport we have had some positive correspondence with local MPs including RH Priti Patel (Witham) and RH Guy Watling (Clacton) as well as RH Vicky Ford (Chelmsford) who is also a member of the General Committee at Essex Cricket. They have all taken forward the case for an early restart of recreational cricket, and there have been some very positive responses. I am also aware that a number of clubs have made their own approaches which have produced some encouraging replies. I would therefore like to encourage you, if you have not already done so, to write to your MP to give a final push to help Cricket get back on the field of play.
To support this Colchester Cricket Club have kindly offered their letter as a template for clubs to use; please see below.
Again, if your club / team / organisation requires any support or advice around reactivating or being sustainable then please do not hesitate to contact myself or any members of the ECiC team.
Thank you all again; ; I am keeping my fingers crossed that we will all be back out in the middle very soon.
